According to popular belief, the tree was grown from a cutting, from the original Bo Tree in Buddhagaya, India, under which the Buddha attained enlightenment. This was brought to Sri Lanka in the 3rd century BC by Princes Sangamiththa. The tree is the oldest historically authenticated tree in the world.
